The game features many differences from its predecessor, including deletion of the worker and builder units, urban tiles replacing districts, Independent Powers replacing Barbarians and City-states, unbounding Leaders from specific civilizations, and more. That’s not all though - Civilization VII introduces a bunch of new features to the series, including a new yield type, Influence, that can be used to conduct diplomacy with other civilizations, river-crossing ability for naval units, and more. The main gameplay changes revolve around the Age mechanics though.

Through the Ages

There are three distinct Ages in the game - the Antiquity Age, the Exploration Age, and the Modern Age. Each of these eras ends with a crisis, forcing the player to add negative policies. Moreover, each Age features its unique gameplay mechanics and a set of playable civilizations. Over the course of the Civ VII campaign, players can track Age Progression, and when its meter is filled, all players enter an Age Transition.

When Age Transition occurs, civilization change follows - it’s time to select a new civilization to continue your empire in the next Age! The game map expands as well, allowing your new civilization to grow and explore the world further while gaining new resources, researching new technologies, making new discoveries, and interacting with new Independent Powers.

It’s worth noting that multiplayer matches can take place in a single Age or become epic multi-age campaigns - a perfect choice for advanced strategists looking for a challenge!
