Dreamscaper is a roguelike action-RPG with the elements of hack and slash,  developed by Afterburner Studios. This indie game takes the player into the haunting world of nightmares, in which a young woman named Cassidy must fight to defeat the monsters - representations of her tormented souls. While she progresses the dreamscape during the night, the day brings new challenges of exploring the city of Redhaven, building relationships, and locating items that will help Cassidy face her nightmares. Dreamscaper was met with a positive critical reception. 

Roguelike gameplay in the world of dreams 

One of the main gameplay features of Dreamscaper is its duality. Part of the game takes place in the dreamscape, an ephemeral land of Cassidy's nightmares, which take the form of horrible monsters and demons. Throughout this portion of the gameplay, Dreamscaper acts as a roguelike game, allowing the player to fight through enemies, including powerful bosses, unlock new weapons and artifacts, and more. Cassidy's lucid dreaming skills will allow her to control the dream to an extent, letting the player warp reality and turn the tide of the battle. Eventually, Cassidy will wake up, leading to the second major component of the gameplay. 

The waking adventure 

Eventually, Cassidy will wake up, leading to the second major component of the gameplay - the exploration of Redhaven. During the day, Cassidy can roam the streets of her hometown, visiting various locations and collecting items that might come n handy while confronting the demons of the night. Forging relationships with the people around her is another thing the player will want to do during the day. Helping Cassidy overcome her mental and emotional issues will unlock new powers and skills to use in the dreamscape. 

Dreamscaper story summary 

Cassidy's life is not easy. Her mental problems made her isolated from the people she cared about. The woman's psychological anguish doesn't torment her only during the day. At night, when she falls asleep, she is transported to the dreamscape - a hellish world built of Cassidy's nightmares. Fighting the demons of her dreams is the only way for her to find closure, but she can't do it alone. Forging new bonds and learning to trust people again will be as important as mastering the fighting skills necessary to defeat the monsters that haunt her sleep. 

Reception

Critics praised Dreamscaper for its well-balanced roguelike gameplay. The reviewers also praised the replayability factor, noting that Afterburner Studios game was engaging enough to make the player want to come back to tackle the challenge of battling Cassidy's nightmares. Many considered the game a hidden gem and a good sign for the direction in which roguelike and roguelite titles are headed.
