Outward is a fantasy survival role-playing game, where you play as a castaway that will need to survive on the unfriendly island full of various dangers. The game was developed by Nine Dots Studio and released by Deep Silver in 2019. It is available on PC (Windows 10).

Gameplay

Outward is an open-world RPG played from the third-person perspective. It is described as an adventurer simulator, and it focuses on the survival, where you have to meet the basic character’s needs, fight hostile creatures, explore the world, and complete the quests. The environment is hostile, and there are a lot of things that may kill you. Not literally kill, however, as when character’s health drops to 0 he falls unconscious and wakes up in one of the 90 random scenarios – you may find yourself being captured by bandits, or back in the town where your wounds are treated.

The game features crafting and magic, with the latter being approached in a unique way in comparison to similar games. It is not available at the start and needs appropriate preparations. Some spells are also usable outside of combat – a Spark, for example, may be used to lit campfires. Spells may be combined to achieve different results. Restoring health and fatigue requires spending time in bed. Sleeping in the wilds is less effective in terms of recovering fatigue because you will need to balance the amount of fatigue restored and the time spent being on guard – you may get ambushed while asleep.

There is no manual saving, forcing you to live with the consequences of the choices you make during your adventure.

Open-World RPG experience

You are a castaway and you start with nothing but bare hands. You better act fast – your hunger and thirst will quickly increase over time forcing you to regularly eat and drink to survive in the harsh environment. Before you embark on a dangerous adventure, make sure you are well prepared. Craft yourself new equipment, get better weapons, and pack some nourishment in your backpack.

Join one of the available factions and complete the quests. Collect ingredients and read recipes to learn how to combine them. Unlock powerful skills and magic spells, defeat powerful enemies, and complete challenging achievements. You are free to go whenever you want, but tread carefully – you are not the chosen one, and even a simple disease may prove to be fatal if not treated quickly.

Game Modes

Outward can be played in single-player mode, but it is multiplayer where the real fun begins. The game can be played with other people, either in online co-op or on the split screen, with your friend sitting next to you. Multiplayer makes the game somewhat easier, as it allows the downed player to be revived by the other.

Reception

Outward received positive reviews. Critics praised the unique take on some mechanics, like the magic and alchemy. A demanding, but rewarding difficulty level was also noted, as well as the presence of the split screen multiplayer.
