An epic adventure in the Wild West is a theme that has been used by film and TV series creators for years, but also by game developers. It’s undeniable that the most recognizable and acclaimed game with a western setting is… the Red Dead series, created by Rockstar Games, which now includes three parts.

For years, games from the series were released exclusively for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. This pattern was broken by Red Dead Redemption 2, which came to PC a year after its initial release. However, the previous instalments were still unavailable for PC players. Until now! The beloved and highly praised second part of the series – Red Dead Redemption – is set to release on PC on October 29, 2024.

Story

Red Dead Redemption takes us to the Wild West at the end of the 19th century. We step into the shoes of a former gang member, John Marston, who is now trying to live a quieter and more righteous life. He even has a wife and a little son. The days of lawlessness, shoot-outs, and duels at high noon are slowly fading. The Wild West is becoming an increasingly industrialized and “civilized” place.

Wanting to fight lawlessness and make the wild plains safer for travellers, government representatives entering the prairies plan to deal once and for all with the gangs terrorizing these lands. They make John an offer he can’t refuse – he must track down and eliminate his former comrades from Dutch van der Linde’s gang. Otherwise, he will never see his family again.

RDR is thus an interesting, moving, dynamic, and action-packed story rich in adventures with the classic western vibe, where tough moral choices are never far away.

Gameplay

RDR1 PC is, in terms of gameplay, the same game as its console versions from 2010 (and 2023 when it reached PS4 and Switch). It is an open world action game played from a third-person perspective.

Given that the game was produced by the same studio behind the Grand Theft Auto series, many players describe Red Dead Redemption and its other instalments as “GTA in the Wild West.” Well, it’s not a lie – there are dynamic pursuits (of course, on horseback) and action-packed shoot-outs. There are also plenty of “walking” missions where we visit various NPCs, complete tasks, and gather funds. We can also take on “bounty” quests. The game offers only a single player mode.

A notable aspect is the typical western film mechanics – chases after stagecoaches, revolver duels, or defending a town from a Native Americans attack.

Additional Content (PC version ONLY)

It’s worth mentioning that the PC version of Red Dead Redemption includes content from the standalone DLC released years ago – Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.

This add-on allows us to get back into John’s shoes, but this time his task is to find a cure for his wife and son, who have been infected by a mysterious zombie virus. RDR: Undead Nightmare was very positively received by players – it blends perfectly western themes with zombie post-apocalypse, giving the game a horror twist!
